5 Reasons Age Spots on Hands Are Harder to Shift Than Anyone Tells You

Every dark spot cream on the shelf lists the same 2 or 3 ingredients and promises the same 2 weeks.

Most people buy 3 or 4 before deciding their spots are just the stubborn kind.

They usually are not.

Here are 5 things worth knowing before you buy another one.

Covering the spots is where most people end up first.

Reason 01

Most of it is aimed at the color, not at what keeps making it

Melanocytes sending pigment up through the epidermis
Pigment is produced at the base of the epidermis and carried upward.

There are 2 things inside an age spot. The color you can see, and cells underneath still being told to make more of it. Lasers, peels and most serums work on the first one. That is why people get a few weeks of something and then nothing. The color came away. The instruction to replace it did not. A smaller number of formulations are built around the second half.

Reason 02

Your hands are not a small face

Hand skin is thinner and has far fewer oil glands than facial skin.

Almost every dark spot product is formulated for facial skin, and the box usually says so. Hands are thinner, have fewer oil glands to hold anything in place, and get washed 10 or more times a day. A face serum is mostly gone by lunchtime. The spots are different too. Face products target hormonal marks. The flat brown ones on hands are decades of sun.

Reason 03

Most of them run out before they can work

The pile most people accumulate over 2 or 3 years.

Pigment does not move quickly. Skin replaces its top layer every 4 to 6 weeks, so anything working on new pigment needs 2 or 3 full turnovers to show. One tube used twice a day on both hands empties around week 5, which is when most reviews get written. The product gets judged at the moment it has done the least.

Reason 04

It does not burn or peel your skin

Five ingredients, two of them active
The full ingredient list, and what is deliberately absent from it.

Most people reach for a cream after something else went wrong. Lasers, IPL and peels work by injuring the skin on purpose, and that injury can leave a mark of its own, a particular risk on deeper skin tones. The formulation above has no acids, no retinoid and nothing that peels. The full list is glycerin, mineral oil, arginine, niacinamide and tranexamic acid.

Reason 05

What happens when you stop using it

Most products sell the fading and stop there. Read enough reviews and the complaint is rarely that nothing happened. It is that something happened, and then came back. That makes sense if the product was only ever lifting color. Take the color away, leave the instruction underneath in place, and the skin refills it. The sun has not gone anywhere, and neither has the instruction.

So there are really 2 options

Option 1

Keep buying the next one

Give it a month, decide it did not work, add it to the pile. Most people here have done that at least 3 times, and it was entirely reasonable given what the labels say.

Option 2

Try something aimed at the part that keeps making the color

On the body part where you actually have the problem, and given the 3 months your skin's own turnover needs. Slower to judge, and the only one with a sensible answer to what happens after.
